1) Maybelline Great Lash Lots of Lashes Mascara. I'm the type of girl who believes that every new variety of drugstore mascara warrants a test run. Out of all the different brands I've tried, this one is my favorite. Why? It actually does what it's supposed to do. It defines, separates, and lengthens my straight Asian eyelashes and it's the only brand I've tried that doesn't clump. I've even worn this on Splash Mountain at Disneyland and it didn't run or smudge, even though it's not a waterproof mascara. And of course, I love the pink tube.

2) Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock. Despite my naturally tan skin, I do burn very easily. I love this sunscreen because it's not greasy like most sunscreens and it doesn't have a strong smell. (Fun fact: As a former color guard girl, I associate the strong smell of sunscreen with band camp.)

3) Corioliss ProFix Ceramic Flat Iron. I love that I can use this flat iron to both straighten and curl my hair. This flat iron was even effective in spiking my hair back when I had a pixie cut. This particular brand only has one temperature setting, but as long as you use a protective spray first, it should leave your hair silky and shiny too.

4) Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula with Vitamin E. My mom brought home a container of this stuff soon after I finally got the bandages off my arms from my two PICC lines. As some of you may remember, I had a horrible allergic reaction to adhesive bandages that left nasty scars on my arms. This balm is really greasy and messy, but it smells DELICIOUS and it seemed effective in fading my scars.

5) Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm. If I could only have one product in my makeup bag, this lip balm would be it. It works much better than Chapstick and it leaves a pleasant tingling sensation on your lips. I love the honey and pomegranate oil varieties too.

FBFF: Blogging Community

This week, Katy of Modly Chic has us discussing how things have changed in the world of blogging and blogging communities. As she writes in her blog post, "There seems to be less community-minded bloggers and more bloggers interested in personal gain...Is this a sign of a change in the make-up of blogging?"

1) What blogging communities do you belong to? Other than the amazing Fashion Beauty Friend Friday (FBFF) group, I am also a member of Independent Fashion Bloggers (IFB). I will admit that I mostly use IFB for their articles and other great resources for bloggers, rather than to actually participate in discussions. I am also a member of The Lost Letters, although I suppose it's more of a pen pal group than a blogging community.

2) What do you think the role of community is in blogging? To me, community is a huge part of blogging. Without participation in a larger community, you have a journal - not a blog. One of the best parts of blogging is that your readers have more opportunities to interact with you. You wouldn't have all these opportunities for direct discussion in other forms of media, so why not take advantage of all the different blogging communities out there?

3) Blog comments, Twitter interactions and meaningful Facebook threads have decreased in the last several months. What are your thoughts on why that is? It's quite simple really; people just have less free time these days. It takes a great deal of time to think of brilliant topics for blog posts and to actually write those posts. I'll admit that I've been slacking off on participating in blog communities for some time. Often, I find that I have limited time to write posts for my own blog, let alone comment on other bloggers'.

I will say this though: No blogger is an island. (Did any other literature geeks out there catch my John Donne reference? Haha.) You can't really expect to become a successful and/or popular blogger if you only focus on yourself and what will benefit you. Community is an inherent part of blogging, no matter how you put it.

4) How do you cultivate community around your blog? Every once in a while, I'll include a question at the end of my posts. After all, I always want to know what my readers think. :) I think I've also gotten better at responding to all the comments I get, even if it's just a simple thank you. I also believe in "comment for a comment." In fact, I've discovered some pretty amazing blogs that way, including At the Pink of Perfection and Star-Crossed Smile. I also have a Facebook page for my blog, as well as a Twitter account. My use of those two tools could definitely use some improvement though.

5) If you could make one resolution to be a better community member, what would it be? Like I just said, I need to make better use of my Facebook and Twitter accounts. Also, I need to get back into leaving more comments for other blogs. I'm hoping to discover even more amazing blogs that way!

FBFF: Wearing White

Memorial Day has quickly come and gone - and can you believe it's already June? - meaning that we can now all feel free to wear white. Personally, I don't pay too much attention to that old fashion "rule." I wear ivory camis under cardigans during fall and winter and one of my favorite year round pieces is a cream silk blouse. That being said, with the summer weather heating up, it's the perfect opportunity to wear true, crisp white again.

Here's how I'd want to wear white this summer:

Option 1: dressy and feminine

For a summer garden party, consider a flowy chiffon white dress, high heeled sandals, and a flower in your hair. This pretty outfit works best with natural makeup. Think soft brown eyeliner, mascara, and a little bit of blush. For an extra classy look, don't forget your pearls!

Option 2: casual and carefree

Skinny, pastel colored pants are a popular trend right now. Wear them with an oversized white shirt and flat sandals and you've got an effortless, yet perfectly put together outfit for any summer day. Is pastel + white a little too sweet for you? Simply add a fun, bright accessory like this coral colored ring for a fun contrast.

FBFF: Christmas Wish List

Let me just make one thing perfectly clear: I love pretty things...and I like giving and receiving presents. Strangely, when Katy of Modly Chic asked us to make our Christmas Wish Lists for this week's FBFF post, I was stumped. Or I suppose it would be more accurate to say, I had a really hard time narrowing my list down. Haha. Anyway, here's what I came up with...

1. a sapphire necklace. Sapphires are my favorite gemstone (yes, even above diamonds!). Of course, this item is part of my *someday* list. ;)

2. a day of hiking and frolicking in the snow. I've been reminding Luke practically every day to take me to Mt. Baldy the moment it starts snowing. This is one part of winter break that I'm looking forward to the most!

3. Kate Spade "Idiom" bangle. This bracelet is like a New Year's affirmation that you can wear everywhere. It reads, "This is the year to...play your cards right, lose yourself in a good book, add a twist, make sparks fly". Sounds good to me!

4. Jeffrey Campbell "Lita" suede ankle boots. Do I even need to provide a description for these beauties? I can see myself wearing these sky high ankle boots everywhere.

5. Juicy Couture "Beau" bracelet watch in rose gold. I don't own a watch and I will admit that I usually use my phone to tell the time. This rose gold watch makes me swoon. And why not? It is from Juicy, after all. :)

6. Jane Austen: Seven Novels. How can I not have a book on my list? This leather bound collection of Jane Austen's novels would be gorgeous just to look at, if not to read over and over again.

FBFF: Giving Thanks

Since this is the last FBFF post before Thanksgiving, Katy of Modly Chic thought it would be nice to share what we're thankful for this year. With everything that has happened to me this past year, I can definitely say that I have a lot to be thankful for. What I have here is just a partial list.

I am thankful for...

• finally experiencing true fall weather in Southern California! Anything below 70 degrees makes me happy.
• my followers, the FBFF community, and the blogging community in general. You guys are amazing!
• my family, who have always encouraged and loved me unconditionally.
• my friends, who never complain about having to hear the same story over and over again.
• April 5, 2010...and the 1 year, 7 months, and 12 days since then.
• having the ability to read and get lost in a good book.
• all of the amazing teachers and professors I've had over the years.
• having access to a good education.
• Nutella hot chocolate.
• being cancer-free and not having a tube stuffed up my arm anymore.
• the fact that my real hair is finally long enough to be a pixie cut.
• turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie...I just have to wait a little bit longer!
• living in a small-ish town that is safe and clean, and within a short driving distance to many malls and shopping centers.

• designated drivers (and the willingness to be one too).

• living in an era (and country) where it's more than okay for a woman to speak her mind.
• platform high heels that make me 5'7".
• having a roof over my head and never having to worry about going hungry.
• starting my Christmas present shopping the day after Thanksgiving.
• my grandma helping me with sewing projects.
• having known some of my best friends for 10+ years.
• my giant 53" teddy bear, for when he's not around.
• inside jokes and stories that we'll still be telling when we're 80.
• headbands, fascinators, and misc. hair accessories.
• my huge, multicultural extended family and next month's Christmas party.
• still having the motivation to succeed, even after graduating high school right before the recession, dealing with ridiculous college tuition fee increases, and soon facing a not-so-ideal teaching job market.
• my body. It's healthy, strong, and it looks pretty darn amazing in pants and dresses. ;)

FBFF: A Novel Idea

November is more than just my favorite month of fall. (In fact, I'm pretty sure it's my favorite month of the year!) This month is also designated as National Novel Writing Month. I'm super excited about today's FBFF prompt, which is to simply list our favorite books.

My Top 5 Favorite Books of All Time:

(a.k.a. books that I've read too many times to count)

1) The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje. I read this novel for the first time when I was a senior in high school. Even though its corresponding film did win the Academy Award for Best Picture, I didn't even watch it until I had read the book three or four times. Yes, I loved the book that much. It is a gripping tale of nations, war, and how love transcends time and place.
2) Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Do I even need to explain why this book is on my list? After all, I did base my blogger persona on Elizabeth Bennet. Also, I'm sure that every girl who reads this novel ends up wanting to find her own Mr. Darcy. :)

3) The Awakening by Kate Chopin. I read this novel once in high school and twice during my sophomore and junior years in college. I thoroughly enjoyed it each time. The Awakening tells a haunting story about one woman's struggle to be independent and find the courage to embrace her identity. Reading this novel always makes me realize how lucky I am to have more freedom in this modern age.

4) The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This is another novel that I've had to read at least three times during my high school and college years. Fitzgerald tells a story about the decline of the American dream and the inability to recreate an idealized past. Definitely read this and then watch the 1974 film - not because it's a particularly good movie, but just because a young Robert Redford is pretty easy on the eyes. :) 

5) To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I first read this book when I was 14 or 15 and I must say, it will always hold a special place in my heart. Told from the perspective of a little girl, the story is both innocent and humorous and profound and critical of a racist society. This novel is so endearing to me that someday, I want to name my dog Atticus.

1) Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. This novel is probably the darkest romantic tale I have ever read. Emily Bronte tells the story of hierarchies and social classes, and how an all-consuming, unchanging love ultimately destroys everything.

2) Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Yes, this novel is incredibly long, but I remember being fascinated with the story when I was seventeen. As the title suggests, this novel tells the story of crime and punishment, but also redemption.

3) The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. From a future English teacher's perspective, this novel is a symbolism goldmine. What I love most about this novel though is its message about identity and society, particularly for women.

4) The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Admittedly, I watched the film before I read the book...but I ended up liking both equally. This novel is a modern tragic romance that revolves around love, loss, free will, and the pain of waiting.

5) The Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer. Yes, I know that the Twilight Series isn't really seen as Literature (with a capital L) by most of my fellow English majors. Still, I have no shame in admitting that I enjoyed these books and characters. (By the way, I am Team Edward all the way!)

So is it weird that almost all of my favorite books are the ones I read in high school? Haha. Either way, I definitely enjoyed putting this list together. So now let's discuss...What's on your bookshelf?

FBFF: Halloween Edition

Yes, I am a day late in finishing this FBFF post. Nevertheless, I hope you all enjoy reading my thoughts and plans for this Halloween. P.S. Answering questions every week is fun and a great way to be part of the blogging community.

Now, with no further ado, I give you FBFF: Halloween Edition...

Halloween 2007 - I recycled one of my old color guard costumes. I was a tree spirit. :)

1) Do you have plans for Halloween? It's funny because I have my Black Swan costume pretty much finished, but I still have no concrete plans for Halloween. Last year I just stayed home and passed out candy to trick or treaters. This year however, I really want to go out and have fun. If not a Halloween party, I'd be happy with just dressing up and walking around a neighborhood to check out the awesome decorations. My BestFriend and I are already making plans to do this.

2) Where do you go for costume and makeup inspiration? Many of my costume ideas come from movies. After I watched "Black Swan," I immediately realized how gorgeous and amazing this costume would be. Then I found a pretty black mask at a boutique in the mall and I got it into my head that I could be extra creative and create a Black Swan masquerade costume. I can't wait to show my full costume to all of you! :)

Probably my sexiest Halloween costume to date. ;)

3) What's the best costume you've ever donned? Pardon the snarkiness, but I really don't like how so many girls in my age group seem to think that Halloween is synonymous with "Dress Like a Slut Day." That being said, one of my favorite costumes I've ever worn was my French Maid outfit. I thought I looked pretty darn cute. Hehe.

4) What's the most creative costume you've ever seen? I have mixed feelings about dogs dressed in silly costumes, but I will admit that I laughed out loud when I saw this Imperial Walker costume.

5) No holds barred if you could dress up as anything, what would it be? Since I love Pride and Prejudice so much, I thought that a Pride and Prejudice and Zombies costume would be awesome for Halloween. The only thing that stopped me from donning this costume this year is the makeup. For one thing, it looks incredibly elaborate (even more so than Black Swan makeup). And honestly, I hate how stage makeup feels on my face. I wore it many times back when I was active in theatre arts and I always dreaded putting it on. This is such an awesome costume though, so I may just have to suck it up and try this for next year.

FBFF: Jumping on the Trend Bandwagon

I feel terrible for not having kept up on Fashion Beauty Friend Fridays posts for a whole month. Well, I'm back to regular posting now and I really like this week's topic: jumping on the trend bandwagon. Katy of Modly Chic thought this would be an interesting topic to explore after experiencing the madness behind the Missoni for Target line.

1) Do you ever see a fad hit the stores and immediately dislike it? Has the fad ever began to grow on you? Yes, it's happened. I thought UGGs were incredibly ugly when they first started becoming popular. Then one year, I received a pair as a present and I fell in love with their warmth and comfort level. I also found ways to make them look cute with skinny jeans and leggings. However, I despise how so many girls here in Southern California wear them in the summertime...with shorts, of all things. Um, eww! But I digress. Other examples of trends I used to hate are animal print, rompers, and faux fur clothing (even though I do love faux fur trimmed pieces - call me picky!) These days, I love all of these trends.

2) Has the popularity of a certain piece of clothing or line ever convinced you to try on something (or purchase something) you dislike? First of all, I would never purchase anything that I didn't like, no matter how popular it is. I would much rather spend my money on an article of clothing or accessory that I love. As for simply trying things on, well, it depends. If I know with absolute certainty that I hate it (e.g. bright, neon colors), then I won't bother trying it on. If I initially dislike something just because I think it won't be flattering (e.g. rompers or maxi dresses for my petite, pear-shaped figure), then sure, I'll try it on. There have actually been quite a few times when I've tried things on that didn't look so flattering on the hanger, only to find out that they look perfect on me. And yes, rompers and maxi dresses are two perfect examples, as well as skinny jeans and sheath dresses.

3) Have you ever changed your mind about a trend after seeing it around for a while? Sometimes seeing what other people (especially bloggers) wear makes me rethink how I feel about certain trends. Still though, if I still think something is ugly, I won't wear it...no matter how long it sticks around. 

4) Do you feel a certain pressure to have specific items in your closet because "everyone else" does? No, not really. I don't feel any pressure to dress like everyone else just for the sake of dressing like everyone else. I wore a long, mermaid-y gown to my senior prom when mostly everyone else wore short, flirty dresses. If I wasn't afraid to dress differently back in high school, then I certainly don't feel the need to dress like everyone else now. :)

5) Be honest: What do you think of the Missoni line? Did you grab any items? Is it worth the Ebay prices? Honestly, I'm not a fan and I have no idea what the fuss is about. No offense to anyone who loves the line, but it's just not my taste. I prefer floral and other more subtle patterns. The zigzag prints and loud colors aren't my style at all.

Style Post 9.9.11 - FBFF Edition

What I have today is a Style Post and an FBFF post combined into one. This week's theme is "Dressing to the Tune." This is my favorite Visual FBFF prompt by far and I was really excited to pick out an outfit based on a song. I chose to interpret "Who's to Say" by Vanessa Carlton.

FBFF: Top Fall 2011 Fashion Trends

You'll have to forgive me to posting this one day late. Despite having no classes, Friday was a busy day for me! (Actually, I have to be honest - I pretty much spent the day hanging out with my boyfriend and his brothers and watching baseball. Tee hee.) 

Anyway, this week's FBFF prompt is to list my top Fall 2011 fashion trends. Admittedly, I don't follow fashion trends too closely. I tend to build my wardrobe based more on what I like than what's trendy. That being said, I'm really loving what I'm seeing for this coming season:

1) Capes and Ponchos. I'm so glad that this capes and ponchos are "in" again! What's not to love? These pieces are incredibly versatile and their one-size-fits-all sizing makes getting dressed that much easier. I have a gorgeous cranberry red one that I've only worn once...at least five Christmases ago. It'll definitely make more than one appearance this fall and winter! I also really love the one pictured below. It looks just as comfortable as leaving the house with your favorite blanket, but much more stylish.

2) Mustard. Now that we're getting closer and closer to fall, it's time to trade the sunny yellows of summer for the more season-appropriate shade of mustard. This brilliant and golden shade of yellow reminds me of the changing leaves and it's sure to make most complexions glow. I'm wearing mustard hued tights in my latest Style Post, even though they do like slightly orange in the photos.

3) Maxi Skirts + Sweaters. In past years, the coming of fall meant having to put away your favorite summery maxi skirt until next spring. Not anymore! I love the new trend of pairing a long, flowing skirt with an oversize sweater. It's a very cozy, effortless look that would look even better with fall's knit hats and cloches. I'm definitely giving this look a try once it's sweater weather.

4) Jade Green. I always surprise people when I tell them that my favorite color is not pink, but green. My favorite shade is emerald, but I also really love jade green, which is supposed to be super popular this fall. It's a gorgeous jewel tone and it pairs equally well with sparkling gold jewelry and low key neutrals.

5) Lace. If you've been following my blog for a while, you'd know that I believe lace is beautiful no matter what the season. I will always love delicate lace dresses and tops in white and shades of pink. However, this fall I want to start wearing lace pieces that are more sexy and sophisticated than pretty and demure. Black and white will always be a classic combination, but add lace to the equation and you have a look that is beyond stunning.

FBFF: Finding Your Dream Job

This week's FBFF post is about dreams. More specifically, it's all about finding your dream job, which really is much harder than it sounds. After all, you have to find the delicate balance between what you're good at, what you love to do, and what you'd actually get paid for.

1) Fess up - if you could do anything professionally, what would it be? If I could live forever, I want to have a variety of different careers: an event planner, an editor for a fashion magazine, a boutique owner, an actress performing on Broadway, a costume designer for the theatre or for period films, or a stylist/personal shopper. What I really want to do is teach high school English. Unlike a lot of the other ladies of FBFF, my top career choice has nothing to do with the fashion industry. (Although you may rest assured that I plan on being the most fashionably dressed English teacher ever!) That being said, there are a few other things that I would also love to do outside of teaching. I want to continue to grow my blog and hopefully someday be able to make money with it. I want to have a novel published someday. I've mentioned before too that I want to eventually open an Etsy store and sell handmade accessories and/or thrift store finds.

2) What draws you to this? Simply put, I'm passionate about a lot of things. I love reading, writing, doing arts and crafts, and helping people - whether it's by teaching a student how to write well or by sharing my opinions on fashion. What draws me toward making teaching my career is the the idea of fulfillment, knowing that I can make a difference in the lives of young people.

3) When did you first start dreaming of this ideal? I decided that I wanted to be a teacher when I was a freshman in college. My confidence in this decision was confirmed last semester when I observed a local high school teacher and how she seemed to make a positive impact on her students.

4) What's holding you back from going all in? As far as my teaching career is concerned, I am going all in. I'm a semester away from earning my Bachelor's Degree and then I plan on taking a semester off to try to gain some work experience before starting the credential program next fall. As for my other dreams, I figured I can pursue them as long as I have a stable career first. Since I consider teaching a calling and a true passion, I definitely won't say it's just a job to fall back on. 

5) Sometimes the first step is the hardest...What's one step you can take now on the way to realizing your dream? Since I'm close to graduating, I feel as though I am getting closer and closer every day. I plan on embracing my chosen path and striving to improve myself every day...and I really believe that's the best anyone can do, regardless of their chosen career path.

FBFF: Location Influences Fashion

Today's FBFF post is all about how where we come from and where we live now influences how we dress. Katy of Modly Chic asks a very interesting question: When it comes to personal style, "are we informed by the trends as much as those around us and the atmosphere we live in?"

1) What part of the world do you blog from? I'm blogging from a small-ish city (approximate population: 75,000) in the middle of Orange County, California.

2) If you had to describe the overall mode of dress for where you live, what would you say? It really goes without saying that most people around here dress in the "California Casual" style. Despite what the stereotypes may say, we're not all surfers. Still, there is a definite beachy vibe in the way people dress. Think tank tops and shorts when it's warm and sweatshirts and jeans when it's cold. "Dressing  up" usually means a sundress and flip flops. And yes, we do wear flip flops year round.

3) Do you fit in with the status quo around you or do you break the mold? It depends on the circumstances. If it's hot, - like it has been lately - I am perfectly content wearing tank tops and flip flops. I wouldn't call those my super stylish outfits though. Once the weather cools down enough to where layering isn't a death trap, I like to dress up a little (okay, a lot) more. I'm sure I get strange looks sometimes, especially when I'm wearing something super feminine/ruffly/dressy at school. And I know for a fact that people stare when I'm out on a date with my boyfriend, who practically lives in basketball shirts and t-shirts.

4) If you have lived or traveled to another part of the country/world, did your clothing choices evolve? When I was 17, I went on a cruise to Alaska with my family...in June. Not only did I have a great time dressing up for fancy dinners on the ship, but I also really loved dressing for the cold Alaskan weather. Seriously, how many girls from Southern California get to wear chic wool coats in the summertime? :)

5) If  you had to describe your style by naming a specific city, what would you be? Wow, this question is really hard! As a self-described vintage-inspired personal style blogger, I'd say my style is more influenced by period films than specific places. But still, cities that come to mind are old New York (The Age of Innocence and The Great Gatsby) and Charleston (the lovely city where The Notebook was filmed). Deep down though, I think I'll always be a Southern California girl at heart. ♥

Visual FBFF - Where I Blog

Today's unique FBFF topic is hosted by Suze of Miss Vinyl Ahoy. It was her idea for us bloggers to share where we blog from. (Read: where we all spend way too much of  our time sitting in front of a computer screen. Haha.)

Anyway, I do all my blogging at my desk in my room. Lucas helped me put this desk together right before I moved into this house. Actually, he did all the putting together and I just helped by removing all the packaging the desk came with. By the way, note the nail polish and glitter next to my tiny speaker and my DIY flower lamp. I'm pretty proud of it. ♥

This has nothing to do with blogging, but here is the built-in shelf on top of my desk. I use it to display a poster full of high school photos and newspaper clippings, my tassel, old bass drum mallets, and my Angels baseball bobbleheads.

I guess the next step is showing my entire room...meaning I'll have to get it organized someday. Maybe one of these days I'll actually show it off. :)

FBFF: Labeling Yourself

Katy of Modly Chic posted a very interesting set of questions that I think we can all relate to as bloggers: labeling ourselves and others.

1) As someone who writes/blogs about fashion, have you placed yourself into some sort of blogging category? Sometimes my posts are about the latest trends - that's when I'm in "fashion blogger" mode. I suppose you can call me a "personal style blogger" whenever I create Style Posts. Back when my blog's name was Pen&Ink, my tagline was "Love. Life. Style." I may just have to bring that tagline back somehow because I felt like it represented me more than any label could. For simplicity's sake though, I don't mind referring to myself as a personal style blogger.

2) What keeps you from or encourages you to label yourself as a certain kind of blogger? The simple answer is that it's just way too difficult to pinpoint my blog into just one specific niche. If I absolutely HAD to assign a fixed label for myself, I'd be a fashion/personal style/vintage-inspired/lifestyle/cancer survivor/inspiration/literature and film lover/miscellaneous blogger. Quite a mouthful, isn't it? Still, I'm sure those labels don't even begin to encompass me and all the potential that my blog can have. I plan on blogging for a long time. Someday I'll have a house and I'll have to add "design blogger" to my already long list of labels. And when I'm married and start having kids, I'll have to add "married life blogger" and "mommy blogger" to that list. Even then, those labels still wouldn't be able to define me 100%. I feel like I'm way too complex of a person to label as just one certain kind of blogger. And you know what? I'm proud of that.

3) When picking blogs to read and follow, are you drawn to ones that indicate a certain group or way of thinking or being? I like to read and follow blogs that inspire me, plain and simple.

4) Do you think there are benefits in labeling yourself or others? From what I've learned about blogging so far, I know that it can be a lot easier to market your blog if you have a definite label and highly focused content that never strays far from your label. I'm Gayle, which means that I have every intention of breaking this rule. :) As Katy mentioned in her post, labels only really work to divide. I know I hated being labeled a certain way in high school and I still dislike it today. As I've mentioned, people are too complex to label and divide into neat little categories. You can label 100 people as personal style bloggers and I'll guarantee you that they're all unique and have their own differences and quirks. That is, after all, what makes us people.

5) Agree or Disagree - We're all just people; we don't need all the labels. I absolutely, positively agree!

FBFF: The Outfit Formula

1) What’s your go-to outfit formula? It really depends on the season. For spring and summer, I like to keep it simple with a cotton sundress, sandals, sunglasses, and a light cardigan or jacket for when the sun goes down. Fall is still pretty warm around here up until around November, so I still like wearing dresses and skirts. When it finally starts getting cold again, I like to add colorful tights or knee high socks. Come wintertime, I'm all about dressing in layers and matching hats and scarves! I've also noticed that I love wearing different colors depending on the seasons. Think bright pink and yellow in the summer, rich brown and burgundy in the fall, jewel tones in the winter, and pastels in the spring. (I love black and white year round too.) And regardless of the season, no outfit formula would be complete without accessories - necklaces, bracelets, rings, headbands, or hair pins.

2) How did you come about this formula? Hmmm...I guess you could say that I stumbled upon this formula  without really thinking about it. These days, I love the simplicity and effortlessness of my pretty dress + cute shoes + cardigan formula.

3) Do you have different formulas for different occasions in your life? I don't really have any set "formulas" for my wardrobe. In general though, I tend to gravitate toward lace and light colors for daytime dressy occasions, v-neck tops and skinny jeans or a figure-flattering little black dress for a night out with friends, or a nice top and a knee length skirt for family parties.

4) Has it morphed over the years? Oh yeah, definitely! I was a jeans-and-tank-top type of girl all throughout high school, all the way up until last year-ish. For evidence, check out this post. Dressy outfits were reserved for holidays and other special occasions. It's funny because now, I usually only wear jeans for when I'm working with my volunteer group. Over the years, I've learned that it's possible to wear dressy clothes while still being comfortable.

5) Which other blogger’s outfit formula would you like to swipe? I don't believe in "swiping" other blogger's style or outfit formulas, but I do believe in being inspired by other bloggers. Lately, I've been finding inspiration from Maria of First Impressions. She always manages to put together so many lovely vintage-inspired outfits...with a twist. Think floral crowns and denim, cat eye glasses and straw hats, high-neck blouses and shorts. I LOVE her style. :)

FBFF: Personal Style and Style Blogging

1) Since you began blogging do you notice a change in the types of things you gravitate towards while shopping? Well...yes and no. I always loved floral prints, lace, and other vintage-y, girly fashion even before starting my blog. The difference now though is that I tend to gravitate more towards lighter, pastel colors. My favorite colors to dress in before were dark, saturated shades; think burgundy, charcoal gray, and dark pink. And I always loved black lace! I don't know if it's because of the warmer seasons or just simple style evolution, but now I'm more drawn to pale pinks, mint green, and white or ivory lace. We'll see, maybe I'll start wearing darker colors again come fall.

2) Do you find, as a fashion blogger, that you dress differently from your family and friends? Do they comment on that? It's not that apparent now, since a lot of people wear sundresses in the summer. :) But I definitely think I dress differently from everyone else in the winter time. I'll admit, winters in Southern California aren't that cold and a sweatshirt and jeans outfit will usually suffice. I prefer nice coats with scarves and cute matching gloves! And I seriously think I'm the only person living in SoCal who owns a pair of earmuffs. Haha. In general though, I guess I do dress differently from my friends. I don't really wear jeans that much anymore and I really do prefer looking a little dressier.

3) What’s the weirdest fashion that you secretly like, even if you aren’t bold enough to wear it? I'll wear anything as long as I like it, even if people think it's weird.  I'm not trying to sound like total hipster, but I loved feather fascinators and veiled headpieces even before they started becoming popular. I remember being completely annoyed because I needed a black birdcage veil for a costume for my dance class. I couldn't find a single one in any of the stores I checked. The solution? I made my own using black tulle and a poof of black feathers that I found at Michaels. Flash forward a year later and Forever 21 and H&M have tons in stock. :) But I digress. The point is, I don't think you should limit yourself on what you wear just because you think not everyone will like it. Be bold and wear what you love!

4) Looking at current trends – what would you like to try but need to build up the courage to do? It's not a matter of building up courage as much as adding several inches to my height. I love the look of wide leg pants, both in basic black and fun candy colors. I absolutely LOVE these pants in mint green. Sadly, I know I would look stumpy in them, even with my highest heels. ::sigh::

5) Toot someone’s horn – what fashion blogger out there inspires you with her bold fashion choices? Lately, I've been inspired by the two ladies of two birds, who always manage to create lots of cute outfits with unexpected pieces. I love their "Style Me" feature. Basically, they take a thrift store find (usually something so ugly that most people wouldn't even give it a second glance) and somehow style that piece to be part of a super cute outfit. I am in awe!

FBFF: Summer Food

Today's FBFF prompt is to share the recipe for one of my favorite dishes. Since I'm still learning how to cook, I don't have a lot of amazing recipes to share yet. However, I do want to try making homemade lemon bars this summer. Lemon bars are one of my favorite desserts and this recipe I found from Betty Crocker seems simple enough.

Ingredients: 

• 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
• 1/4 cup powdered sugar
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 2 teaspoons grated lemon peel, if desired
• 2 tablespoons lemon juice
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 2 eggs

Directions:
Step 1: Heat Oven to 350 Degrees F.

Step 2: Mix flour, butter, and powdered sugar. Press in ungreased square pan (8x8x2 or 9x9x2 inches), building up 1/2 inch edges.

Step 3: Bake crust 20 minutes.

Step 4: Beat granulated sugar, lemon peel, lemon juice, baking powder, salt, and eggs with electric mixer on high speed about 3 minutes or until light and fluffy. Pour over hot crust.

Step 5: Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until no indentation remains when touched lightly in center. Cool; dust with powdered sugar. Cut into about 1 1/2 inch squares.

Step 6: Enjoy!

FBFF: Summer Trends

This week's FBFF post is all about the five trends I'm most excited about wearing all summer. (Pretty ironic considering that we're experiencing a June gloom right now.) Oh well, the sun has to come out sooner or later! :) Anyway, I wouldn't say that I'm a hardcore trend spotter. It's more like, I see something I'll like and I'll wear it, regardless of what's "in." Case in point: supposedly 70's inspired-bell bottom jeans are "in" now. I refuse to wear anything but skinny or boot cut jeans, just because those are the only kind that are flattering on me.

Well, enough of my babbling, here are the five things that I'm looking forward to wearing this summer:

1) The Little White Dress - Here's a summery alternative to the classic little black dress. Paired with a colorful cardigan, these would be perfect for brunch with your best friend. These dresses could also be dressed up for nighttime with metallic heels and jewelry. And for those nights when it's too cold to go out with bare legs, black tights would look amazing under these dresses.

2) Maxi Dresses - I used to think these wouldn't be flattering on me because I'm so short. However, I've discovered that it is actually possible to wear a maxi dress even if you're under 5'4" IF you 1) wear some kind of heel or wedge, 2) choose a dress that isn't too voluminous, and 3) wear a belt to define your waistline. These dresses are great for trying out the 70's trend that's supposed to be really big for this summer.

3) Coral - I'm not usually a fan of orange, but I love this pinkish shade of orange.This color would look very pretty paired with white (perfect for the beach!) Add aqua to the mix and you'll have a perfect retro-inspired color palette.

4) Vintage-Inspired Swimsuits - Not only are these swimsuits amazingly glamorous, but they also tend to be more figure-flattering for curvy girls. I would love to try out a high waisted swimsuit, but I'd be worried about the weird tan line I'd get. :)

5) Floral Prints - I will always love floral prints, no matter what the season is. That being said, floral prints are especially beautiful in the late spring and summer, when the sun is shining and it's warm enough to wear sundresses and sandals. :)
